Cuckoo Weir island is a 7 acre site in the Thames where we have 10 outdoor pens that can house up to 180 swans. Each pen contains a pond that has constant flow of river water.
We have an intensive care unit which has been recently extended to house 10 heated indoor pens for the most poorly swans. The intensive care unit also consists of a treatment room stocked with various medical supplies, specialist swan bath for the oiled swans, laundry room and a nearby office which allows staff to closely monitor the patients.
Outside we have 10 protected enclosures which provide the next stage of recovery for the swans, some of which have indoor heated sheds suitable for both swans and cygnets.
We recently had a new enclosure built by numerous local businesses and volunteers specially designed for newly admitted cygnets of a particularly young age which provides them with a natural transition into care.
We are hoping to build a hydrotherapy pool in order to provide more comprehensive treatment.
Outdoor pens each with a pond and a sheltered feed area.
They are constructed from heavy duty fencing to deter rats, mink and foxes. The pens are covered with netting to minimise access by ducks and other birds.
The enclosures have wooden shelters to offer protection from the sun and for those birds who require shelter at night or those lacking waterproofing.
An Intensive care unit where they can be monitored closely and given daily medicines/treatment. Each unit has an infrared heat lamp for those that require extra support.
Treatment room fully equipped with medical supplies for after care
