Black Swan

Cygnus atratus

Black Swans breed in Western/Southern Australia, New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania. They weigh around 6.4kg (male) 5.3kg (female). They are not as territorial as other swans and nest in colonies. Black swans are usually kept in private collections in the UK and should be pinioned to prevent their threatening the indigenous mute swans. Black swans can survive in England in the wild, but often do not breed very successfully because they produce their cygnets during our Autumn.
